Actually, it’s a bit of a coincidence.
Layer 1.
Initially, I just wanted to pick a simple name. Since the core function of this app is essentially switching audio/video from point A to point B, I casually chose the English name “Atob”—straightforward, meaning from A to B.
Layer 2.
Then I wanted to come up with a Chinese name, starting from the meaning, but needed to avoid very common ones like “Echo.” The original intention of the app is to cater to niche languages and niche communities, attempting to explore the boundaries of language. So from the initial idea of “声界” (meaning “the boundary of sound”), I finally settled on “语迹” (meaning “the trace of language,” also “the margin of language”). The idea of a “trace” subtly implies the process of moving from point A to point B.
Layer 3.
“Atob” is simple and clear, but it feels a bit incomplete—maybe adding an ‘e’ to make it an actual word, “Atobe”? Even though it’s not an English word. “Atobe” comes from the Japanese surname “跡部 (Atobe)”. “跡部” means “mark” or “trace”, which coincidentally aligns with the “迹” in “语迹”. But “Atobe” sounds a bit like “Adobe”—could that be an issue? I don’t think so. The full English name will be “Atobe Repeater”, and in Asian regions, it will be recognized by the Chinese name “语迹” or similar kanji. It should still be clear and unambiguous, right?
Finally.
With the initial idea coming to life like this, I hope not to let this coincidence go to waste. If it gains broader recognition in the future, maybe I’ll change it to a more distinctive term—something to look forward to~
